The Government of Malta renews new Dragonara Casino’s 10-year concession

After the 10-year licence concession for Dragonara Casino expired, the Government of Malta had issued a fresh call for proposals with the same casino reaching the finish line once more

A new 10-year casino concession agreement has been granted to Dragonara Gaming Limited through the Government of Malta. As of the 1st of August 2021, Dragonara Casino will be commencing a new 10-year warranty.

In order to keep providing players with the highest gaming experience, Dragonara Gaming Limited is said to be investing a total of € 10 million Euro to new technology, systems, and equipment during their upcoming new concession period.

Dragonara casino which is a subsidiary of Peninsula Gaming Group Limited – a joint venture between IZI Group Plc (Malta’s largest retail-based gaming group) and Toss-a-Coin Limited, has been operating Malta’s Dragonara casino since June 2010 after it had won another call for international tenders issued back in 2009 and had duly obtained the licence to operate by the Malta Gaming Authority.

Johann Schembri, the CEO of Dragonara Gaming Limited expressed that when the company took over the operations back in 2010, they embarked on a vision to not only transform the casino but also to modernise it and help the land-based casino sector flourish in Malta.

He goes on to say: “we took over a casino property that lacked investment and innovation and a business sector that was grossly underserved. Within a few years, through a very aggressive and well-planned investment program, the Dragonara casino regained its position as the leading casino in Malta and a respected name internationally. Despite the setbacks of the recent years due to the COVID-19 restrictions, we look into the future with a renewed sense of optimism and an unwavering commitment to continue investing in the sector and more importantly in developing a unique destination in one of the best locations in Europe.”

He closes off his remarks by penning out plans for the upcoming future where the casino will witness development and restoration in the next years according to Mr. Schembri. “This will be attained while ensuring that we preserve the historic and cultural value of the property and providing an entertainment experience in full compliance with responsible gaming and player protection.”

The second successive term of this land-based casino will undoubtedly sustain its contribution towards the growth of the land-based casino industry in Malta and continue positioning the casino as one of the most prestigious properties in Southern Europe.
