From peaks to progress: SiGMA Foundation’s second Mount Toubkal expedition

Months of intense training and meetings on how to tackle Mount Toubkal prepared the latest team of dedicated expedition participants for an amazing feat that the SiGMA Foundation has just accomplished.

Mount Toubkal, standing at 4,167 meters above sea level, was climbed over 3 days by the Foundation’s team of 22 individuals. Starting from Imlil, the team stayed in refuges overnight, and encountered the full spectrum of mountaineering challenges, facing the Moroccan heat as well as icy temperatures, all in pursuit of reaching the summit.

All members successfully reached the summit, providing a real and true sense of accomplishment—not only for overcoming such an intense physical feat but also for having made a true impact. After months of dedication to training and, of course, all of their fundraising efforts, this moment was the culmination of hard work and determination.

This expedition allowed the team to truly immerse themselves in Moroccan culture and what the country has to offer. The warm hospitality, delicious cuisine and the spectacular scenery are just a few things to mention. “Taking on Mount Toubkal, bonding with locals and getting a view of their amazingly different way of life and delicious cuisine, all while raising money for a good cause, made this whole trip so much more than a holiday. A truly unforgettable experience.”, shared Sami Baddar, expedition participant.

The fundraising efforts that expedition members made varied from beach clean-ups, yoga and fitness sessions, to bingo nights and even going as far as subjecting workplace company executives to hilarious tasks and commitments such as washing an employee’s car, being a butler for a day, or giving up their parking space for a month. All these activities amounted to a successful contribution, all going towards the Women Empowerment Project in Bonga, Ethiopia.

The Women’s empowerment project

Set to be inaugurated this coming October, the Women Empowerment Project aims to provide vocational skills to 500 women annually who are currently living below the UN poverty level. This initiative seeks to offer tailored educational programmes and skill development opportunities in areas such as IT, cookery, sewing, and hairdressing. By equipping these women with essential skills, the project aims to create a ripple effect of positive change, transforming empowered women into agents of change who can influence social norms and uplift their communities.

The SiGMA Foundation’s dedication to such meaningful causes exemplifies the power of collective effort and the spirit of adventure, making every step taken on Mount Toubkal a step towards a brighter future for many.
