India: Tip-off leads to major gambling racket in Banur

Punjab police detained over 70 people during raid on an illegal gambling racket

A tip-off led the Organised Crime Control Unit (OCCU) of Punjab Police, to an illegal gambling racket active in the Mohali district, India, leading to the arrest of 70 people, including ten women that were being used as bartenders and dancers.

The Punjab police conducted the raid under the guidance of OCCU chief, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh (pictured). The raid took place on the weekend between January 30 and 31 after midnight on the outskirts of Banur towards Zirakpur at a place called New Life Marrage Palace. The items that were seized during the raid were:

Cash worth Rs8.42 lakh, 47 vehicles, 40 liquor bottles, playing cards and laptops.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP), Dinkar Gupta, said that all backgrounds of those arrested will be investigated while forensic examination of the laptops and mobile phones which were seized during the raid is also underway to uncover further details

Furthermore, according to the Indian Express, sources within the police stated that, Paramjeet Singh Pammi – the kingpin of the gambling racket – was also arrested on the spot.

An FIR was registered under sections 61/1/14 Excise Act, 13/3/67 Gambling Act, 3/4/5 Immoral Trafficking Act and 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
