European Parliament endorses new e-ID law: a game changer for the gambling industry

The European Parliament’s recent endorsement of the new European Digital Identity (e-ID) law marks a significant milestone in the journey towards a more secure and inclusive digital environment for all citizens across the European Union.

This decision has been warmly welcomed by the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA), a prominent trade group in the gambling industry.

Impact of e-ID on the gambling industry

The e-ID regulation, backed on 29 February, aims to eliminate previous security and privacy concerns raised by the public around using third-party providers for identification. It allows individual consumers and businesses to identify themselves using the e-ID, thereby streamlining the identification process.

The new digital identity iteration is expected to positively impact several industries, including gambling, by reducing costs and administration fees associated with the use of commercial databases. However, the success of this streamlined approach hinges on its voluntary adoption by individuals and businesses. The EGBA has been a staunch supporter of the e-ID since it was proposed by the European Commission in 2021.

The trade body recognized the e-ID’s potential to revolutionize the way online services are accessed and utilized in the EU. Since the proposal, the EGBA has been encouraging EU institutions to ensure that businesses, including gambling operators, can access and use the e-ID and benefit from its use. For the online gambling sector, the e-ID holds particular significance as it provides players with an easy, secure, trustworthy, and singular option to confirm their identity in the EU.

Leap towards enhanced security and user experience

Maarten Haijer, Secretary General of EGBA, expressed confidence that the use of the new e-ID in the sector will lead to a more seamless and trustworthy online experience for players and help reduce costs and administration for gambling operators. This innovative tool aligns with EGBA’s core objectives of promoting integrity, transparency, and a safe, consumer-centric playing environment. It represents an important step towards building a more secure and user-friendly digital ecosystem.

The e-ID law now only has to pass the vote in the EU Council of Ministers to be officially adopted, which is planned to take place before the summer. This development underscores the EU’s commitment to enhancing digital security and inclusivity, with potential far-reaching implications for various sectors, including the gambling industry.
