Over 1,000 illegal gambling sites blocked from Australia??

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has ramped up its efforts to combat illegal online gambling by requesting that Australian internet service providers (ISPs) block additional gambling websites. In its news release, the ACMA said recent investigations revealed these services were operating in violation of the Interactive Gambling Act 2001.

The newest sites to face the ban include Richard Casino and Wanted Win. Website blocking is just one of several measures the ACMA employs to shield Australians from illegal gambling operations. These actions target services offering prohibited interactive gambling (such as online casinos and slot machines), unlicenced online betting platforms, and advertisements for such services. Last June, ACMA banned three operators namely A Big Candy, Jackpoty, and John Vegas Casino.

Enforcement actions?

Since the ACMA’s first blocking request in November 2019, a total of 1,011 illegal gambling and affiliate websites have been blocked. In addition, over 220 illegal gambling services have withdrawn from the Australian market following the ACMA’s stringent enforcement of offshore gambling laws.

The ACMA can block websites if they offer prohibited gambling services, operate without a valid Australian licence, or advertise illegal gambling services. This multifaceted approach aims to reduce the availability and appeal of illegal gambling options.

Consumer protection and awareness??

The ACMA emphasises that even if a gambling service appears legitimate, it likely lacks crucial consumer protections mandated by Australian law. Consequently, Australian laws cannot assist if issues arise, such as the withholding of winnings by the service provider. To ensure safety, Australians are encouraged to consult the ACMA’s public register to verify if a wagering service is licensed to operate in the country.

?A continuing battle??

The Australian media authority remains committed to safeguarding Australians from the risks associated with illegal online gambling. By continuously monitoring and blocking illicit sites, the ACMA aims to foster a safer online environment and uphold the integrity of the country’s gambling regulations.?
